Worthing Horticultural Society was formed in 1890 making it one of the oldest societies in Worthing. It was founded by a group of well-known business people, all of whom had an interest in many aspects of horticulture. These interests enabled the first show to be held at the Pier Pavilion in 1890.
The Society has had various venues over the years; marquees covering the Steyne Gardens; on to the Assembly Hall which used to hold a 3 day event each year and now Broadwater Green under canvass on the last Saturday in June every year.
The shows used to have many trade stands, such as Barnwell Brothers, Greenyers, Goatchers and Shopwhyke Nurseries from Chichester to name but a few, all exhibiting their speciality plants.
We now incorporate flower arranging classes in our shows supported by the Worthing Flower Club and we have recently introduced an inter-schools growing competition, promoting healthy living and home grown vegetables, which is proving to be extremely popular.
If you have interesting memories or photos of the past connected with the Society, we would love to hear from you, and we may include them on this page. -
